Rigging your greenhouse up with a drip irrigation service will automate many gardening tasks in the winter months and keep your greenhouse plants thriving throughout the coldest parts of the year.

However, it's important to avoid the following five common mistakes to achieve success in your greenhouse irrigation system.

1. Giving all plants the same amount of water

When you're irrigating a greenhouse, it's important to recognize that you've got many diverse plant species worked into a small space. As such, it's important to account for the differing water needs of each plant. 

Outside of a greenhouse, you are probably irrigating large plots of land uniformly. In contrast, you'll need to water zones of your greenhouse according to the plant type that is located in each individual zone. 

1. Not installing a collection tank to recycle water

You can make your greenhouse irrigation system more efficient and less expensive if you install a collection tank that will reuse water rather than letting it go to waste. 

3. Using overhead watering

Overhead watering is inefficient for a greenhouse setup because it is less able to pinpoint certain spots than in-ground irrigation. In a greenhouse, pinpointing a specific zone and giving it a precise amount of water is more important because of the diversity of plant types and lack of space. 

4. Neglecting preliminary research

Putting research into planning out your irrigation setup will maximize the cost effectiveness of your system over the long term.

You want to research the water needs of each plant and group plants together according to water needs to facilitate the convenience and effectiveness of your watering system.

Not only do you need to plan out the water supply to each area, but you also need to consider sun exposure. Sun exposure will dry up moisture and make it so that a certain area needs more water because of evaporation. 

5. Mixing irrigation head types

When you're having a drip irrigation system put into your greenhouse, you should aim for simplicity. Mixing irrigation head types complicates your system and can cause discrepancies with run times. 

If you are using multiple irrigation heads, one irrigation head will likely let out a different amount of water than another when running for the same amount of time. It will be harder to keep track of how much water you're applying to particular plants when you have mixed different irrigation head types.
